Though We Were Brothers!

We fought!

Though we were brothers,

We were caught!

In our conflicts

Ignoring daughters, wives, sisters, and mothers.

When our children meet on the street,

They play and they squabble,

They know our stories

Remember our grief

The echoes of yesterday,

Rest at their feet

They look at each other

They know not what to say,

They smile,

Then they frown,

Finally, they look away,

Because we fought (and we were brothers).

The world is abundant,

There is plenty to share,

Yet we fight with our brothers,

And our cupboards are bare!
